My fiance has rheumatiod arthritis in his feet and ankles and in the back. He tosses and turns almost every night to where it keeps him up and also me. We are going to look for a mattress this week. Should we look more deeply into firm or soft mattress'?

I think you should get a memory foam mattress. Most people sleep restlessly on their sides instead of sleeping soundly on their backs. Memory foam mattresses will solve this problem because the memory foam supports the whole body weight distribution that sleeping on your back is meant to provide.

My mom was hospitalized in January with pneumonia, upon her stay at the hospital she contracted a staph infection. Within a few weeks of leaving the hospital she began having pain all through her body. About a month later when she finally got into the doctor, they ran some tests and discovered that she has rheumatoid arthritis. It just seems strange that she never had symptoms prior to being at the hospital, and now she's hurting all over every day. I'm afraid that it could've been a misdiagnosis, as she is cared for by the VA and they missed my stepdads non hodgekins lymphoma (which thank god was caught at another hospital, thanks to his persistance ) I'm just curious if there are any other conditions that could have been overlooked, or If there are any treatments herbal remedies or anything she can try. I feel so bad for her cause shes active and can't do things that she wants to do. She also is experiencing anxiety attacks from the stress. Any help would be awesome! Thanks!

Could be tons of things: lupus, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis for just a few examples.

You know, all doctors miss things – it's not just the VA. It took a year-and-a-half to diagnosis the chronic illness I have. I've known people with lupus or MS where it took 5 years to get a diagnosis. It's unfortunately very common.

Can my mom cure her arthritis naturally?

Posted by: admin | Comments (4)

What could I recommend to her?

I've heard that a heathy diet will improve arthritis, but I'm not 100% sure.

these are a few tips to help cure arthritis naturally:

1. Eat fresh! You should eat as many foods that you can that are raw and fresh. By giving up preservatives and additives you can actually prevent future arthritis flare-ups. Arthritis prevention is always the best treatment for arthritis.

2. Switch to water! If you give up coffee, soft drinks and even alcohol, you will feel like you are 10 years younger in 3 weeks. I guarantee it will be a difficult 3 weeks of withdrawal to get there though. You might want to try to wean yourself off of these through slowly working yourself off the sugar and caffeine.

3. Lower your sugar intake. Most arthritic symptoms are associated with high levels of sugar.

4. Enriched is bad! Stop eating foods with white flour because of the adverse effects of the 'enriching' process. Start reading the labels.

5. Deer velvet. Have you heard about the regenerating powers of a supplement that can actually rebuild your cartilage and cure arthritis naturally?

Arthritis, hopefully, is coming to an end. But there is still prescription products that doctors do prescribe, which really do work rather well.

It's Possible!! There are some autoimmune diseases, for example, lupus and scleroderma, that the symptoms include joint pain. Eventually, the diseases attack the internal organs; that could cause soft tissue pain. But, the organs' functions will be impaired; those problems are much more serious than pain.

If you have joint pain, it is very important to see a Dr. for the proper tests to find the cause of the joint pain, rule out life-threatening illnesses, and get the right treatment.

Good luck!

here’s the case… Angela is 96 years old, and both of her hands and feet are severely handicapped with Rheumatoid arthritis.
>1. can a surgery lessen the pain of RA?
> 2. is angela advisable to undergo a surgery considering that she’s 96 years old?

please help me to answer this question. thanks!

I dont know but I would imagine that surgery may not be possible because of her age. In saying that the Queen mother had a hip operation in her 90’s. I suppose it depends on certain factors like how good is her health, Would she be able to withstand an operation..etc

What causes arthritis in your lower back?

Posted by: admin | Comments (1)

I would like to know #1 what causes arthritis and #2 is it something that just shows up after a bad auto accident?
Thanks.

Arthritis (from Greek arthro-, joint + -itis, inflammation; plural: arthritides) is a group of conditions where there is damage caused to the joints of the body. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in people over the age of 55.

There are many different forms of arthritis, each of which has a different cause. Rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis are autoimmune diseases in which the body is attacking itself. Septic arthritis is caused by joint infection. Gouty arthritis is caused by deposition of uric acid crystals in the joint that results in subsequent inflammation. Additionally, there is a less common form of gout that is caused by the formation of rhomboidal shaped crystals of calcium pyrophosphate. This form of gout is known as pseudogout. The most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative joint disease and occurs following trauma to the joint, following an infection of the joint or simply as a result of aging. There is emerging evidence that abnormal anatomy may contribute to early development of osteoarthritis.

All arthritides feature pain. Patterns of pain differ among the arthritides and the location. Osteoarthritis is classically worse at night or following rest. Rheumatoid arthritis is generally worse in the morning; in the early stages, patients often do not have symptoms following their morning shower. In elderly people and children, pain may not be the main feature, and the patient simply moves less (elderly) or refuses to use the affected limb (children).

Elements of the history of the pain (onset, number of joints and which involved, duration, aggravating and relieving factors) all guide diagnosis. Physical examination typically confirms diagnosis. Radiographs are often used to follow progression or assess severity in a more quantitative manner.

Blood tests and X-rays of the affected joints often are performed to make the diagnosis.

Screening blood tests may be indicated if certain arthritides are suspected. This may include: rheumatoid factor, antinuclear factor (ANF), extractable nuclear antigen and specific antibodies.

Treatment options vary depending on the type of arthritis and include physical and occupational therapy, lifestyle changes (including exercise and weight control), and medications (symptomatic or targeted at the disease process causing the arthritis). Arthroplasty (joint replacement surgery) may be required in eroding forms of arthritis.

Can There Be Rheumatoid Arthritis Cures

Posted by: admin | Comments (9)

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects joints of a human body. The disease causes inflammation in and around joints, which result in decreased mobility.

As in all autoimmune diseases, the body tissues are mistakenly attacked by its own immune system. Rheumatoid arthritis can also cause inflammation of tissues present in other organs in the body. That is the reason why this disease is sometimes referred as systematic illness. Rheumatoid arthritis cures, if any, are possible only by early diagnosis and timely treatment.

Causes
In rheumatoid arthritis, specific antibodies present in the blood begin to attack the healthy tissues of the body. The disease starts with pain and inflammation in joints. As it progresses, it starts affecting the muscles and other organs also. The disease normally attacks people who are between 40 to 60 years of age. Wrists and hands are some of the first joints to be attacked. This condition can be genetic, but there are other factors as well (like smoking) that lead to its onset.

Symptoms

The preliminary symptoms for rheumatoid arthritis include swelling of the joints. At first, the delicate lining (synovium) of the joints are inflamed. Gradually, the joints stiffen and turn red. You may also suffer from a low fever, loss of appetite, and/or fatigue. As the disease progresses, the synovium gradually becomes thickened. In advanced rheumatoid arthritis, antibodies attack the entire joint by breaking down bone, synovium and cartilage. Cartilage is the strong white flexible substance found between the joints in the body. There is greater inflammation in the entire joint area resulting in heaviness and pain. After some time it becomes very difficult to bend the joints.

Cures for Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Treatment depends on the severity of your symptoms and medical history. The rheumatoid arthritis specialists (Rheumatologists) tailor a specific treatment based on your medical history. This may include anti-inflammatory drugs like analgesics etc to ease the pain or administration of cortisone shots to control swelling and stiffness. The specialist may also suggest you medications (like prednisone) to reduce the risk of joint deformity. If the disease is in its advanced stage, treatment measures may include extraction of fluid from the joints through arthrocentesis.

Some common rheumatoid arthritis treatments include sufficient rest, splinting of affected joints and mild exercise programs. Good nutrition is also very important because patients often experience anemia and weight loss.

True, that there are no known cures for rheumatoid arthritis, but an early diagnosis and treatment can substantially reduce joint inflammation and pain. Timely treatments can prevent joint destruction and deformity and prolong joint functionality and mobility. However, one should always remember that rheumatoid arthritis treatment can be much more successful if there is a close co-operation between the doctor, the patient and his or her family members.

Arthritis is inflammation of the joints. It can occur anywhere in the body and, based on that, there are several types of arthritis. The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis, which is the common ailment of pain in the joints observed in elderly people. Other common types of arthritic ailments are rheumatoid arthritis and gout.

The word arthritis is derived from two root Greek words – arthros meaning ‘joint’ and itis meaning ‘inflammation’. Hence, arthritis literally translates as inflammation of the joints.

Arthritis is an auto-immune disease, which means, it is a disease in which the human body attacks itself. It begins in one or two joints where an acute pain is felt. This is the most miserable phase of arthritis. Over time, this pain may disappear, but it could cause permanent deformities in the bones and joints.

In all types of arthritis, the following symptoms are observed:

- The initial pains are felt as fleeting pains in the joints, which seem to be no more than a twitching pain.

- Pains alternate between various joints quickly.

- If the arthritis becomes acute, then on a particular day there is very sharp pain in a joint, and it becomes absolutely normal the next day. The next day another joint could be affected in a similar fashion.

- The pains could increase in the winter season or in cold nights.

(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Arthritis

- Alfalfa (Medicago satina)

Alfalfa makes the food residues in the body alkaline, which helps in assimilating them easily into the blood. This is effective in reducing the rheumatoid pains. Tea is made from the seeds of the alfalfa for consumption.

- Castor seeds (Ricinus communis)

The seeds of castor are beneficial in arthritic pains that are of a gouty or rheumatoid nature. The seeds are made into a poultice and applied over the affected joints.

- Celery (Apium graveolens)

The high sodium content of celery is useful in relieving the pains of arthritis. Freshly extracted juice of the celery plant must be taken for the best results.

- Garlic (Allium sativum)

The benefits of garlic in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis are acknowledged all over the world. It relives the pains of arthritis due to its anti-inflammatory properties. There are very little or no side-effects in using garlic as a remedy.

(2) Dietary Treatments for Arthritis

Constipation can aggravate arthritic pains. Hence foods that are difficult to digest must be avoided.

The following foods must be avoided if you have continuous arthritic pains:

- Animal fats

- Fried foods

- Foods rich in carbohydrates like potatoes

- Tomatoes

- Peppers

- Salt

- Sour foods, including curds

Taking five cloves of garlic early morning is a good diet remedy for reducing arthritic pains. Bitter vegetables have also been found to have excellent properties in the treatment of arthritis. These include bitter gourd and bitter drumsticks.

(3) Ayurvedic Treatment for Arthritis

Mahayogaraja Guggulu is the drug of choice in arthritis. Its dosage depends on the climate. In winter season, the dosage is double of what it is in the summer. In summer the dosage is two tablets twice a day. The preferable mode of taking these tablets is on an empty stomach, and they should be taken with milk or warm water.

For bigger joints suffering from arthritis, Brihadvata chintamani is given in a dosage of 250 milligrams twice or thrice a day. If the spine also develops arthritic pains, then the dosage increased for a week; then returned back to normal. For chronic arthritis, Maharasandhi kwatha is prescribed.

Mahanarayana taila is prescribed for external application over the affected joints. The application must be done with a gently massage. In the winter months, the oil must be warmed before application for better results.

(4) Home Medications

Some household remedies are known to provide relief from arthritic pains. The following are some of the more benefiting ones:-

- Applying a paste of limestone and honey on the affected joints externally provides relief.

- Mash some mustard in warm water and apply this solution on the joints. This must be done repeatedly to get results.

- Put two teaspoons of cumin into a glass of water. Bring this to a boil. When the water is still hot, soak a towel in it and foment the affected region with this towel. This will provide relief from the pain within a few hours.

- Asafetida mixed with egg yolk can be applied on the affected joints to seek immediate relief.

- Prepare a pancake from wheat flour. Roast it on one side, but leave it uncooked on the other. Then put some heated mustard oil on the uncooked side. When it is hot, tie it like a tourniquet on the affected joint, or provide fomentation with it. This provides quick relief.

- Mix some cardamom in milk. Put a pinch of turmeric in this milk. This is to be drunk every night while going to sleep. This makes the person sleep peacefully in the morning.

Simple yogic asanas and light exercise helps proper digestion of the body and also protects it from autoimmune problems. Hence, these are beneficial in arthritis.

If you have recurrent pains in the joints, then do not keep the joint covered. As far as possible, keep the joint exposed to the air. For example, if you have pain in the knee joints, then do not wear tight denim clothing; shorts would be a good idea. This will provide freer circulation of blood in the joint and reduce the pains.
