From the age of around 45 years, a majority of men begin to experience changes in their urination patterns. In varying degrees, the experience can be a subtle change or can become a very distressing painful and in some cases embarrassing experience. This is the age at which the prostate gland begins to change and may swell around the urethra and constrict the flow of urine. This may mean an increase in the urge to urinate more frequently as the restriction inhibits emptying of the bladder. In extreme cases the restriction may be extreme and result in painful slow elimination. Kidney problems may follow.

Most pharmaceutical products have limited if any effect and so, more and more men are turning to herbal alternatives with some promising results. Most recent prostate studies show that herbal remedies are a more effective treatment method than drugs.

The most common herbs used successfully are;

1. Saw Palmetto,

2. Stinging Nettle,

3. Rye Pollen,

4. Pygeum, and

5. Lycopene.

Lycopene is one of the more promising recommended substances. It is a component of tomato and is only present in cooked tomato products. European diets where tomatoes are widely used have been associated with low incidence of prostate enlargement.

Erectile dysfunctions and painful ejaculations are associated with drug based treatments and so men are naturally very wary of this. Herbs on the other hand have few if any harmful effects. Herbs are also more affordable.

Combine Herbs For More Effective Treatment

Saw Palmetto Berry, stinging nettle and Pygeum Africanum, are often used in combination to produce a more potent and effective treatment for prostate problems.

The Saw Palmetto berry contains both serona repens and serrulata. Together these make a powerful combination, making it no surprise that this berry has been in use for hundreds of years. It is also an aphrodisiac which increases the production of sperm and increases sexual prowess.

On the other hand Stinging nettle has been recorded as an effective treatment of arthritis but also prostate disease.

The African Plum or Pygeum is another popular herb used to treat the prostate.

Whilst all these are effective in the treatment of prostate conditions, it is imperative to visit your doctor at least six monthly to check for changes in the size of the prostate. It is a case of early intervention as well as prevention may win the day.

Common Pet Medications

Posted by: admin | Comments (2)

There are lots of veterinary and pet medication websites to be found on the Internet nowadays, and all claim to be the foremost authority and source for your pet’s needs. Buying medication for your pet is okay, as long as you know exactly what you’re buying and the proper amounts to administer to your pet. Thus, the professional advice of a registered veterinarian is invaluable. The information to be found in this article does not intend to replace the care of a professional; its purpose is to be used as an educational guide to your pet’s medications only.

Adequan
In treating arthritis, injections are given twice a week for 4 weeks for a maximum of eight injections. Injections are given intramuscularly. Dogs, cats, and horses are the usual patients.

Buspirone Hydrochloride
In veterinary medicine, buspirone has been especially helpful in the treatment of phobias (such as fear of thunder, people in uniform, etc.) and in the treatment of urine marking in cats.

Carprofen
Carprofen is a member of the class of drugs known as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), the same class as such common over-the-counter remedies as Advil (ibuprofen), Orudis (ketoprofen), and aspirin. The chief use for such drugs in the dog has been pain relief, usually joint pain or post-surgical pain relief.

Cephalexin
Cephalexin is a good broad spectrum antibiotic, which means it is useful in most common and uncomplicated infections.

Chlorpheniramine Maleate
It’s an antihistamine and it’s used for acute inflammatory and allergic conditions such as snake bites, vaccination reactions, blood transfusion reactions, bee stings and insect bites, and to manage itchy skin.

Clemastine fumarate
Clemastine fumarate is one of the more effective antihistamines albeit relatively expensive. Its efficacy makes it a common first choice for itchy skin. It has found to be helpful in 30% of itchy dogs and 50% of itchy cats.

Diazepam
There are many uses for this medication since it is effective as an anti-anxiety medication, a muscle relaxant, an appetite stimulant, and a seizure control drug.

Diphenhydramine
Most obviously, diphenhydramine is an antihistamine and it’s used for acute inflammatory and allergic conditions such as snake bites, vaccination reactions, blood transfusion reactions, bee stings and insect bites.

Enrofloxacin
This medication may be used in either dogs or cats to combat different types of infections, especially those involving Pseudomonas.

Fenbendazole
In dogs, it is useful against roundworms, hookworms, and the more difficult to treat whipworms.

Griseofulvin
This medication is used to treat ringworm, a fungal infection of the skin involving fungi.

Meclizine hydrochloride
An excellent product for people that can also be used for car-sick pets, meclizine hydrochloride is generally used for nausea relief due to motion sickness.

Metoclopramide
Motility disorders are common and may be chronic or of sudden onset. When motility is reduced in the stomach, food pools there and creates a sensation of nausea and bloating.

Orbifloxacin
Orbifloxacin may be used in dogs and cats to combat different types of infections, especially those involving Pseudomonas. This medication is also active against Staphylococci, and thus is commonly used for skin infections.

Phenobarbital
In dogs and cats, phenobarbital is probably the first choice for seizure suppression. It is effective, safe if used responsibly, and is one of the least expensive medications in all of veterinary practice.

Phenylpropanolamine
Phenylpropanolaminecan be used to help control appetite or as a decongestant, but in veterinary medicine it is used almost exclusively for the control of urinary incontinance in the female dog.

Pyrantel pamoate is effective against numerous parasitic worms, such as roundworms, hookworms, and stomach worms. When a new puppy or kitten is adopted and has been said to have been dewormed, the chances are it is this product that was used.

Ranitidine
Ranitidine is useful in any situation where stomach irritation is an issue and ulceration is a concern.

Terbinafine
Terbinafine has activity against other types of fungi but at this time it is mostly used against ringworm.

Trimethoprim Sulfa
Trimethoprim sulfa is known by many names as it’s a commonly used antibiotic in both human and veterinary medicine. It’s become a popular choice thanks to its broad spectrum and inexpensive cost.

The symptoms of lower back pain vary from mild discomfort lasting for a short period to severe pain that is long term. Therefore if you are undergoing pain in your back and don’t seek some kind of treatment for backache, the pain could become a recurring one which would be harder to prevent. Back pain can be caused by excessive stress on the back, fractures, or arthritis of the spine; however, the most common cause is a sprain or strain.

A women gains an average of 25 pounds during pregnancy and loses most of it in the weeks following birth. As your uterus grows, its size causes your canter of balance to shift. To compensate for a heavier abdomen, you throw your shoulders back. This puts pressure on the lower back and gives pregnant women the “duck waddle” in their walk. Ligaments connect the uterus to the lower back and to the groin; as the baby grows, these stretch and cause pain. The pelvis is the bony structure through which the baby passes as he is born; in order to make room for him, the ligaments in the pelvis must stretch during pregnancy.

Causes of Low Back Pain

There are many diseases and injuries that can cause back pain. If back pain comes on suddenly, it’s usually a sign of a muscle tear, sprained ligament, or ruptured disc. The spine contains intervertebral discs, a kind of cushion made of cartilage that fits between two vertebrae (bone segments). A slipped disc occurs when pressure on a disc causes it to bulge or rupture, pushing cartilage sideways. The cartilage presses on the spinal cord nerves, causing intense pain.

Nutrition for a Healthy Back

Backache prevention and treatment are also connected with diet. Daily meals of a person taking care of their back should contain plenty of raw vegetables and fruits (except bananas). The backache sufferer should have three to four meals every day, which include, apart from fruits and vegetables, wholewheat products, milk and fruit juice. One suffering from back pain should avoid fatty and fried food, sugar, spicy condiments, strong tea and coffee.

Evening primrose and borage seed oils may help. A study in the Annals of Internal Medicine reported that tender and swollen joints were reduced in patients taking the gammalinolenic acid dose as opposed to a group taking a placebo (sugar pill). Black currant seed oil may also may reduce inflammation and joint tissue injury. The study was published in the British Journal of Rheumatology. If you are taking medication for arthritic pain, you may wish to combine it with either vitamin E or C. A study reported in Arzneimittelforschung reported that combining antioxidants or vitamin E with indometacin, sulphasalazine and/or indometacin controlled symptoms more effectively than drugs alone.

Remedies

Rhus toxicodendron: This remedy can be useful for pain in the neck and shoulders as well as the lower back, when the pain is worse on initial movement and improves with continued motion. Even though in pain, the person finds it hard to lie down or stay still for very long, and often restlessly paces about. Aching and stiffness are aggravated in cold damp weather and relieved by warm applications, baths or showers, and massage.

Sulphur: This remedy is often indicated when a person with back pain has a slouching posture. The back is weak and the person feels much worse from standing up for any length of time. Pain is also worse from stooping. Warmth may aggravate the pain and inflammation.

Lately I been having pain on my hands and wrist and the Dr. said that it might be the beginning of arthritis and I am wondering if it can be cure or is there any medication that can stop it if it has no progress that much?

Also, what exactly is Arthritis and how does this affect the body or organ and how bad can it get or what is the worse that can happen if I have it?

Arthritis is a progressive disease which gradually becomes worse as you age. There is no cure for this. You can go to WebMd.com and type in arthritis and read up on this condition and how to manage it. The use of tylenol on painful days is often recommended, sometimes an anti-inflammatory such as naproxen, ibuprofen. Arthritis makes your joints more stiff and painful as you get older.

Joint Pains: Causes and Cure

Posted by: admin | Comments (3)

Joint pains are quite common in adults these days. It is important to know what causes joint pains and how it can be helped.

Those who suffer from joint pains know how helplessly agonizing it can be. There are several causes for the development of joint pain. It can appear externally or internally in the human body. But, no matter where or how it develops, it can debilitate and change our lives.

Joint pains can crop up in various locations. When cartilage supporting the joint is compromised, pain may develop in the front, back or sides of the knee and progress into severe joint pain.

From the start, you need to know what causes joint pains. Injuries and other body conditions are usually responsible for joint pains. The most common causes of joint pains are:

  • Excessive wear and tear of the joint muscles (particularly applicable to athletes)
  • Osteoarthritis (growth of bone spurs and cartilage degeneration at a joint. Common in adults above 45 years)
  • Chrondromalacia patella (weakening of the patella cartilage)
  • Tendonitis (inflammation of a tendon)
  • Fractures and injuries
  • Osteomyelitis (inflammation of bone and bone marrow, usually caused by bacterial infection)
  • Gout (inflammation of the big toe due to uric acid metabolism disorder, resulting in accumulation of the acid and its salts in the blood and joints)
  • Bursitis (inflammation which are fluid-filled sacs protecting the bones in the joint)
  • Aseptic necrosis (scant blood supply to a bone area, resulting in bone degeneration)
  • Autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, which further stiffens the joints
  • Contagious diseases like hepatitis, influenza, mumps, chicken pox, measles, etc
  • Sickle cell disease (an anemic disorder in the cells)

Now that you know what causes joint pains, you must also know that these are curable and have various treatments. Many people prescribe home remedies to relieve joint pains, while others turn to their doctor for medication. Apple cider vinegar, for example, is one effective and tested pain-reliever home remedy. Garlic cloves, fried in butter, papaya seed tea, powdered pepper fried in sesame oil, etc are yet more of the most-practiced home remedies for joint pains.

Other people try new therapies and vitamin supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate to soothe their pains. Synflex Liquid Glucosamine is one such handy remedy to cater to your suffering; this contains the proper amount of glucosamine, which has been proven effective. Many sufferers around the world have gained relief with such medication. The only thing you need to ensure pain relief is regularity in taking the dose. Almost all stores stock some variation of glucosamine today. The good news is that these medicines will not burn a hole in your pocket. Syn-flex Liquid Glucosamine is an affordable form of Glucosamine. You can take Synflex Liquid Glucosamine for as little as 50-60 cents per day. Synflex or no Synflex, joint care health products are abundant in the market.

Try Holistic Treatment For Arthritis Pain

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

If you dislike taking over the counter or prescription medications to control your stiff, swollen joints, consider trying a holistic treatment for arthritis pain.

These treatments allow patients to avoid medications that can potentially interact with current medications or conditions while still ensuring they are free from pain and keep their range of mobility.

Although a holistic treatment for arthritis pain may seem unusual or unique, many of these treatments have garnered a great deal of success in patients of all advancements of the disease.

Furthermore, these treatments will allow arthritis sufferers to experience a better overall sense of health and well-being, since the treatments tend to focus on the entire body instead of just the afflicted area.

When it comes to finding a holistic treatment for arthritis pain, consult your physician regarding alternative options to traditional prescription medications.

More and more arthritis sufferers are choosing these homeopathic treatments, especially with the recent controversy surrounding Vioxx, the prescription medication proposed as a cure-all for arthritis pain, but proved to cause more serious problems, including heart problems and even strokes.

Consider ancient Eastern exercises like Tai Chi. This slow moving and stretching form of exercise is popular with individuals of all ages.

In addition to slowly using all the muscles and joints in the body, Tai Chi is an excellent way to achieve an introspective look.

Another great alternative method for treating arthritis pain is to consult an acupuncturist.

Using age old techniques for identifying the parts of the body thought to be connected, your pain, swelling, and stiffness associated with arthritis can be diminished.

Another homeopathic method of treating arthritis without using prescription medication is to use all natural herbs, vitamins, and minerals instead.

This is an excellent way to ensure you do not experience any problems with arthritis while not being at risk for drug interactions.

The Misinformation of Depression

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

More than 20 million Americans take Prozac, Ritalin, Xanax, Valium or other potent psychotropic (brain altering) drugs prescribed on the basis of DSM labels. Most of these patients – and their physicians – honestly believe that these drugs constitute “treatment.” But many of these patients would be better off receiving no treatment at all than taking drugs.

If you really dig into the facts it is obvious that we are being fed a bill of goods when it comes to depression.

•Depression is not a disease – Drug companies promote depression as a terrible disease that could lead to suicide if left untreated by their product. This has led to millions of people being over medicated with drugs that have serious side effects including the potential for suicide.

•Antidepressants do not fix anything – the biochemical imbalance theory is a myth concocted to justify the prescription of antidepressants. These drugs are not nearly as effective as we are led to believe and can lead to addiction.

•Doctors are not doing their jobs by writing a prescription – instead of finding the cause they are merely covering the symptoms. In most cases an antidepressants causes more problems because of the side effects.

•The Government can’t and won’t protect us – The current FDA admission that antidepressants can cause suicidal thoughts should concern everyone taking these drugs. The FDA had the information all along but refused to acknowledge it. The recent problems with other drugs such as Vioxx and Celebrex demonstrate clearly that the government is not watching out for the consumer.

•People’s lives are being ruined by a medical system out of control -

Psychiatrists have a history of using inappropriate drugs. At one time LSD and Ecstasy were used to “treat” patients.

•An even bigger crisis is coming – Children are now being targeted as the next big market for antidepressants. The federal government has launched a program that recommends screening school children for mental illness to promote the use of antidepressants.

There is nothing more important than taking care of your health. This is particularly true of taking care of your brain’s health, because a person can lead a fulfilling life with a bad kidney or an arthritic knee, brain dysfunction by its nature takes away the very substance of an individual. There is nothing more important than protecting your brain’s integrity.

It’s ironic and tragic that these drugs, which people take in the hope of lifting their depression, can cause both depression and mania while they are being taken and during withdrawal from them. The tragedy is compounded when doctors fail to realize that the patient is undergoing a withdrawal reaction, and instead conclude that the patient is suffering from a primary case of worsening depression or mania. The patient may even be put back on the drug, and other drugs may be added to the regimen, when the patient really needs to be withdrawn from the offending drug.

Picture for instance, a patient visiting a general practitioner for treatment of a swollen hand. A quick evaluation by the physician reveals that the hand indeed is twice its normal size, feels hot, and is turning an unpleasant color. Now suppose that the physician – instead of diagnosing the patient’s life threatening infection and treating the infection with antibiotics – simply prescribes pain killing drugs and sends the patient home! “Treating” a patient’s behavioral symptoms with an antidepressant is no different. Although the patient may be lulled into a temporary sense of wellness, the disease processes that created the patient’s symptoms are still present and often growing worse.

I know I’m only 17 years old and arthritis is very uncommon for someone my age but I’ve noticed that my knee has been getting really stiff recently and it’s been raining a lot. It’s also been hurting but I haven’t done anything to really make it hurt. Am I making this up or could it really be arthritis?
